Two Podcasts!

Hey everyone!

As I use social media less and less these days, like many other artists I know and follow, I decided to rely more on my blog and Patreon, which have the great feature of being able to contact you directly. I don’t have to rely on the whims of any algorithm or feed my stuff to AI directly.

(This being said, I have my doubts about WordPress – the company which I’m currently using to host my blog – seems to be selling all their data to third parties to use it to train AI, so I might have to look for an alternative when I have a moment).

But, for now, I will post more things here to keep you all connected!

OK, so first thing in this manner: I recently took part, as a guest, in two incredible, long-form podcasts that are already live online and available here:

The ART DEPARTMENT PODCAST episode Season 2 Episode 5, hosted by the great artists Emmanuel Shiu and Jan Urschel. I’m talking (in English) mostly about art, morals, my artistic “career,” the art environment in Japan, and such stuff – things I have been thinking about a lot for the current book of essays I’m working on.

Watch here:

The second thing is the Brzmienie Świata z lotu Drozda episode 210, where I talk (in Polish this time!) with the host Paweł Drozd about all themes of Japan, anime, “Your Name.” but also about morality in art.

Watch here:

Both were great opportunities that allowed me to speak a bit about some things that I think and write about A LOT recently!

When choosing your new hosting, Substack always gets recommended. Please be aware they regularly and happily continue to host neo-nazis and fascists: FT Article, The Atlantic Article

They’re also closed source. I recommend checking out Ghost, it has the same newsletter functionality as Substack, works as a blog, and is available hosted like WordPress or is fully self-hostable (which I do myself for multiple sites), if you’re so inclined.

Very cool, will listen to the Art Department podcast soon!

Because you mentioned this: I think you can now opt out of the AI training on wp.com.

You could probably move your existing blog to your own domain (or subdomain), the selfhosted version of WordPress (wp.org) is free of AI stuff and very customizable. It’s a bit technical I guess, but nice if you want to keep the blog archive and comments and so on. Substack sounds like just another social media silo waiting to get worse.

But yeah, it has gotten quite unfriendly for artists out there. Good thing you’re dusting off this blog!

Yeah, I self-hosted WP in the good-ole-days before social media but I had a lot of problems with hacking – people using exploits in WP software to take-over my website a few times. It’s very painful to restore stuff :/

    Witam.

Słabo, że nawet WordPress widzi tylko komercyjną stronę egzystencji…

Zaraz biorę się za słuchanie podcastu. Polski ofcors najpierw 😀

Ostatnio robiłem mój pierwszy projekt modelu do druku 3D.

Ah! Drukowanie 3D byłoby do moich jakichś DIY pomysłów super! A adaptery do wkładów by się różne podrukowało ale te linki też wyglądają fajnie! Super! Jeszcze więcej rzeczy na listę dlaczego “drukarka 3D by się przydała kiedyś”. Pozdrawiam!

Just listened to it, and that was a great interview!
I tried to look at the chart, or graph of the photofrapher but couldn’t find it. It is possible for you to share it here, or somewhere? I’m really curious!
    Thanks a lot!

Hi! This is the original post: https://note.com/hatanohiroshi/n/n3c2d06be0514 the graph is there at the bottom, in Japanese but it’s a simple thing I explained in the podcast.

    Hi Mateusz,

I wasn’t sure the best way to contact you, so I chose this one. You’ve inspired me to start writing and drawing again, and even starting a blog. I love your obsession with distraction-free writing devices, which is why I wanted to recommend one I recently found on Kickstarter. I hope it catches your interest!

    Wishing you all the best.

Hi! Yes! I saw this one, but … to be honest … it looks a lot underwhelming – especially the dark screen, lack of functionality and short battery life for such a chunky device. Recently this crowdsourcing campaign looked a bit better (more DIY style though) https://www.crowdsupply.com/zerowriter/zerowriter-ink
